Appearance: Upperside orange and black similar to the Monarch, except for the post median black line across hindwing and a single row of white dots in the black marginal band. Flight is a sequence of flap-glides.

Wingspan: Large; 2 1/2 to 3 3/8 inches.

Habitat: Stream and lake edges, willow thickets, wet meadows, and wooded edges; plains, foothills.

Flight times: May to September; two to three broods in most of its range.

Larval Foodplant: Willows, apple, cherry, poplars, and cottonwoods.

Did You Know…
Not only do Viceroys gain protection from predators by mimicking distasteful Monarchs, the grown caterpillars resemble bird droppings!  Third-stage caterpillar makes a shelter from a leaf tip and overwinters.
