Appearance: Above, orange with black patches at base of wings and black wing margins. Pale chevrons are seen within the black border of hindwing. Below, hindwing shows a very “busy” pattern with white arrowheads, zigzag lines brown and white in color.
Wingspan: Small; 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches.
Habitat: Open areas, roadsides, prairies, stream sides, forest edges; plains, foothills, montane.
Flight Times: May to late July; two broods. Third-stage caterpillars overwinter.
Larval Foodplant: Several plants in the Asteraceae family including sunflowers, and other aster species.
