Appearance: Irregular wing edges. Above, orange with dark outline. Hindwing, has black central spot and light submarginal spots on the hindwing. Below, variable, with mottled appearance.

Size: Medium; 1 3/8 to 2 inches

Habitat: Coniferous or mixed woods

Season: Single brood flies midsummer to fall; overwinters and flies and mates the next spring

Larval Foodplant: Willows, alders and birches

Did You Know…
Adults will occasionally visit flowers, but most often are attracted to dung and sap.
