Appearance: Above, male forewing orange with a broad dark border; female the same with a black streak below cell. Below, orange-yellow with light veins.

Size: Small; 1 1/8 to 1 7/16 inches

Habitat: Undisturbed tall and midgrass prairie

Season: June through July

Larval Foodplant: Big Bluestem and possibly other native grasses

These skippers court and mate in overcast conditions (Opler, 1999).
